This scene takes place in 2033, sometime between Engaged to a Supervillain and Game On.
The smell of smoked wood and crisp pine needles whispered across the yard in front of the Powells’ porch as the light faded over the tall trees surrounding Camp Sable. Eleven-year-old Ruby slipped through the front door and paused to take it all in.
Inside, she could faintly hear the cartoon Aunt Tanvi had set up for Curran, Luke, and Ruby’s three younger cousins. Jake had worn the kids out with pool games that afternoon, and they all seemed happy to lounge on the couch and floor of the living room while the adults gathered to wait for a late dinner. Tanvi and Aiden had also chosen to hide inside, but Ruby didn’t feel like hanging out with the other kids. She wanted to see what the adults were doing.
She slid down the porch to where her mother, Juliet, their guests Wildfyre, Marco, and Marco’s pregnant wife, Rian, were sitting in lawn chairs, sipping drinks and watching as Fade and Jake messed with the grill a little ways away. Kaylee, Jake and Juliet’s younger child, who was only one, dozed on her mother’s chest.
“I didn’t realize ribs took so long,” Juliet moaned. “I’m starving.
“Perfection takes time!” Jake called out, waving a pair of grill tongs in her general direction.
